Our flight ended up being bumped back to late that evening, so Aidan excused himself to make some calls, which gave me time to take a nice, long bath in the massive, jetted tub—being careful not to submerge my stitches, of course— and call Cheryl and Lilly with something more substantial than a text update. I also offered a sincere apology for scaring the shit out of them. When I told Lilly I didn’t know when I’d be back to work, she assured me I’d have a job whenever I was ready to return.

Something in the way she said it, though, made me wonder if she expected me to come back at all. There was a bit of sadness in her voice, a softness she didn’t often show even to her girls. It sounded like goodbye.

Cheryl, true to her nature, flirted, laughed, and dropped filthy comments about Aidan that made Nelson’s insinuations seem tame in comparison. I laughed a lot, scolded her for being such a perv, and purposely ignored any questions about what it was like being so close to Aidan.

“Aww, come on! You can’t tell me you haven’t at least thought about it,” she whined dramatically.

I peered through the balcony’s sliding glass door and didn’t see him in the immediate area. “Of course I have. But I’ve been doing that since I was fourteen.”

“Yeah, but when’s the last time he was close enough for you to do something about it?”

“Ten years ago, on graduation day,” I admitted. “He kissed me after the ceremony.”

I could still see him in my mind, his blue graduation gown unzipped and hanging open to reveal the dress shirt and pants beneath, his tie crooked to one side from the breeze as we hugged and congratulated each other. When he leaned back to look at me, our eyes locked, and we stood there for a long moment, still holding tight to one another. There was a flash of something in his eyes—something feral and hungry—and before I knew it his lips were on mine.

I’d never been kissed like that.

Not before or since.

Not with such passion and intensity, such adoration and longing. While his mouth on mine had laid bare the need within him, his hands gently roamed up my back and across my shoulders, coming up to settle on either side of my face, tenderly tilting my mouth up to meet his.

The few sexual experiences I’d had in my lifetime all paled in comparison to that one perfect kiss.

“Casey?” Cheryl’s voice brought me out of my reverie. “Hello?”

“Shit, sorry Cher,” I muttered, shaking myself and wishing I’d brought my glass of ice water out onto the balcony with me. I was suddenly parched. “And like I’ve said a thousand times, when we’re outside the club it’s okay to call me Kinlee.”

“Eh, I like using your stage name even though I know your real one. Feels covert, like being in on a secret or something.” She quieted for a moment before adding, “I’m gonna miss you around here, Case.
